Why is sportident printer kit just printing one line of garbage for each download?

Running an event without a laptop, using the sportident printer kit and it's just printing a line of garbage for each competitor. What is causing this and how can I fix it ?

The printer expects the download/printer SI unit to talk to it at a speed of 4800 baud. Check that you haven't set it to a faster speed by accident - use SI-Config to check and alter the speed.
